GROOMING STANDS 101
Selecting the Right Stand
Grooming stands are a necessity for goat or sheep showmen, especially those who plan to show for multiple years. Blocking or Grooming stands make handling & grooming goats or sheep a much easier task. They can be used to wash, clip, trim hooves, administer medicines or accustom your goat or lamb to being handled. Stands are made of heavy steel or aluminum. There are a variety of styles and most can be ordered with different features to meet your needs. They are priced in the $300 range for basic models. Take a minute to look at the features to see what fits your barn best! This will help avoid purchasing the wrong item.
HEADSTAND OPTIONS AND FEATURES
- Headstand #1 – This red headstand will easily adjust in height and length to accommodate short and tall animals. The length adjustment comes in handy with larger breeding stock. The cheek piece is open and can accommodate different ways to secure your animal.
- Headstand #2 – This blue headstand will adjust in height only. It has a solid cheek piece.
- Headstand #3 – This blue headstand will adjust in height only and more suitable for feeding grain to dairy goats during milking.
- Headstand #4 – This red portable headstand is made to attach to fencing. This is handy if space is limited and a full size stand is not available. This puts your animal at a lower level and may require more bending over during grooming. It does not come with a base stand. Shopping Cart: $50-$60
- Headstand #5 – This view is to show how headstands are adjustable in height and width. This helps with large breeding stock who will take up the length of the stand.
BASE STAND OPTIONS & FEATURES
- Base stands come in two different heights and fold up for easy storage. The shorter legged models are generally used for dairy projects and the taller version makes grooming more comfortable.
- The rear legs can be folded to create a ramp. This can used to stretch out the back muscles and get the animal to relax before a class.
OPTIONS:
- Wheels – If the base does not have wheels, get a pair! They can be purchased to fit on the front legs or have a set welded on! We welded a pair on the base stand so in the folded position, it could be wheeled around.
- Side Rails and Ramps can be purchased for loading breeding stock that may have
difficulty stepping up or young exhibitors who need some help keeping the project safe. - Goat Platform – This platform (step stool) helps young goats who may not be tall enough to reach the head stand.
- Individual Stands – These are good for breeding stock or where space is limited and the livestock are large.
CLUB STANDS
- For Breeders or Clubs who have several sheep, a show rack may be useful. These stands are best used for displaying projects for sale or to stretch out and relax multiple animals prior to show. For grooming needs, it is best to pull the animal off the rack and place it on a individual stand with legs.
SUMMARY – There are many options for grooming stands. Pick the best setup for your project. They are a tool that helps with grooming & training your goat or lamb to have their legs handled. The stands can be easily sold once your showing career is finished.
